Lock Unlock Performance Art Project

In the times of the global pandemic of COVID 19 in 2020

LOCK UNLOCK Performance Art Project originated from the effect of ‘unphysical’ gatherings sustaining the times of the global pandemic of COVID 19 in 2020. The project consists of a bi-weekly, simultaneous performances by 9 Artists from different world regions.

Based on the experiences of the pandemic, global experiences -the lock unlock- online activities and initiative began. The program has established itself as continuous zoom gatherings which alternate in simultaneous, virtual and recorded performative actions, followed a week later by a discussion amongst the invited participants. The -the lock unlock- project with its zoom meetings is edited and generated through YouTube and social media platforms. We as artists and performance artists are able to bridge and temporarily overcome the absences of travelling, artistic nomadic interceptions and live exchanges at the crossroad of public interventions.

Crucial questions arose during the beginning, and reflections of the recordings are mainly concerned with the attention for the participatory role of the spectator in the live situation versus this peculiar non-negotiable, non-appearance in the absences of the viewer due to international community restrictions.  The experience of energy, bodily forces, smells, interactivity, smells, sounds and movement through multiple sources was missed and has been sacrificed, yet somehow survived in new virtual research avenues.

Title: It's time

Concept: Two artists share the same space at the same moment. Their movement and their individual task differs by way of unplanned, un-announced, un-structured and un-intentional meeting by one common denominator: occupation of identical space and time. In the absence of the public eye and in the presence of the camera their actions appear unrelated. Though their presence-relation supersedes any conscious cohesion.

They are here and now, together and they start to collide. In collision, a new meaning emerges. It draws on the relationship between the body and the

objects as a displaced, unified, ontological category. On one side, the attempt is to dissolve the presence of the object through movement, and the presence of sounds. On the other side, there is an attempt to combine the body, the time when sound travels through movement in space.

This work impacts as Live Performance for the camera and implements, in a sense, how it is possible to find euphony from two different perspectives, in the eye of the camera as it appears in the recording of moving images sourced by two different entities of fleeting experiences.

It's time.

It's time for collision.

Open Source Live Performance with Jeanne Hamilton, Yingmei Duan, Dagmar I. Glausnitzer-Smith

Under the restrictions of the global pandemic in the absence of the public viewer, camera, photography by Barbara Benfrádj-Niwa and Christian Niwa, Braunschweig 26.9.2020, Wolfenbüttelerstrasse 39, Werftraum Park

Three regional artists from the Braunschweig area came together to enter a situation of simultaneous live performance. Each artist engages within their own individual entity to sustain perseverance …

EN: For the performance I brought 10 objects that helped to guide me through the 30 minutes. I took over the role of the aggitated, sometimes desparate, queer intellectual, consulting the objects including pills, books by Hannah Arendt, a vibrator and some old 1980s glasses. I was trying to find my way through the insanity.

EN: The gathering of materials from different sources and origin determine in this situation the beginning of an unsettling, gradual moment of unmanageability, when the outset appears still controllable, when the outset liberates the draping of colours and textures, when the outset maintains a movement of rhythmic intervals, then suddenly the conduit is being interrupted by a set of dis-coordinate signs, and in part emotional turmoil and the body governed by will is ornate.  Until the overwhelming amount of material under the fear of suffocation leads to the surrender in trance.

The Purge of Painted Desires

On Line Zoom Performance

Webinar November 2020

followed by Discussion with Barry Kostrinsky NYC

Concept

The proposal of “ The Purge of Painted Desires “ as a zoom performance for November 22, 2020 PEPA online event will further research its visual extensions with the contradictions of appropriations towards a virtual presence. It endures the location, yet is discovering corners to become potent spaces, stripped of their function to have been a room corner, surfaces which appear as flat canvas by first impression, transform into the scape zone of the middle ground of painting or seen in Zen Master Eishu’s Landscape drawings, become the definitive only for a brief moment before it escapes.

The idea of escape returns with the aspect of desire. The centre of attention dissolves as the virtual, flat screen is not infinite in its corners.

Who, may I ask is the viewer of the edge?
